Why Do Electric Heaters Need Tip-Over Detection?

Electric heaters, ceramic heaters, and portable heating appliances may tip over during use due to impact, pulling, uneven flooring, or unstable placement.

Especially on carpets or similar surfaces, continued heating after the appliance tips over may cause localized overheating and expose nearby objects to excessive heat, increasing the risk of fire.

Design Focus

In addition to heating control, an independent orientation / tip-over detection mechanism allows the appliance to immediately obtain a status signal when an abnormal posture is detected and then perform shutdown or power-cut protection.

The Role of a Tip-Over Sensor in the System

The main task of the tip-over sensor is to determine whether the appliance orientation exceeds the preset condition and provide a status signal to the MCU, control board, or safety circuit. The system then decides whether to stop heating, turn off the fan, or issue an abnormal-status alert according to the product design.

How Does the Optical Roll Ball Sensor Detect Tip-Over?

The RBS3111 optical roll ball sensor uses changes in internal orientation to determine whether the appliance remains in its normal upright position. When the heater tips in any direction beyond the preset condition, the sensor output changes and the control system can perform the required safety action.

Why Consider 360° Omnidirectional Tip-Over Detection?

The actual direction in which a heater may tip over cannot be predicted in advance. It may fall forward, backward, sideways, or diagonally. Therefore, complete tip-over protection should evaluate orientation changes from multiple directions rather than detecting only one direction.

How to Select the Tip-Over Angle?

The trigger angle should not be selected based on the sensor specification alone. The product center of gravity, base design, normal operating inclination, and safety requirements should also be considered. The following can be used as an initial guideline:

What Should Be Confirmed During Design?

Maximum allowable tilt range during normal product operation.
Desired protection trigger angle and whether the sensor mounting reference matches the product horizontal reference.
Actual mounting orientation of the sensor and PCB.
Whether the fan, motor, handling, impact, or normal movement may cause temporary false triggering.
Whether an appropriate delay or debounce function is required in the system.
Whether the system should use immediate shutdown, delayed shutdown, automatic reset, or manual reset after tip-over.
Note: Software delay or debounce can help reduce false triggering, but it cannot replace the necessary hardware safety design of the product.
