Why do upright appliances need orientation and tip-over detection?

Upright appliances such as standing fans, air circulators, air purifiers, dehumidifiers and portable air conditioners may tilt or tip over due to collision, pushing, movement, cable pulling or uneven flooring.

Abnormal orientation may affect normal equipment operation. Taking a fan as an example, if the motor continues running after the unit falls, it may increase the risk of mechanism jamming, product damage or contact with rotating parts. Therefore, the tilt condition can be integrated into the control logic as a trigger for shutdown, alerts or safety protection.

If you only need fixed-angle judgment, an IMU is not always necessary

If the system only needs to know “normal / abnormal” or “whether the set angle is exceeded,” a fixed-angle tilt switch can provide a simple status signal and reduce sensing-data processing and firmware complexity.

Fixed Angle / State Judgment

Suitable for applications that only need to determine normal / abnormal status or whether a defined threshold has been exceeded, and can directly provide an ON/OFF-type control input.

Continuous Angle / Dynamic Orientation

If the application requires continuous angle display, direction vectors or dynamic orientation information, an accelerometer, IMU or continuous-angle sensing solution should be evaluated.

Control Logic: The sensor mainly provides a status signal, while the MCU, controller or safety circuit executes the subsequent shutdown or alert logic.

Why consider omnidirectional tip-over detection?

The actual tip-over direction cannot be determined in advance. Equipment may fall forward, backward, sideways or diagonally. If product safety requirements call for recognition of tip-over conditions from different directions, an omnidirectional orientation-detection approach can be evaluated to improve the completeness of abnormal-state judgment.

Design Focus:Omnidirectional detection is not simply about increasing the sensing range. It ensures the product can maintain consistent safety judgment logic even when the tip-over direction is unpredictable.

What should be confirmed during design?

  • The maximum acceptable orientation and tilt range during normal operation.
  • The angle and orientation conditions that should trigger shutdown or an alert.
  • The PCB, sensor location and actual installation angle, including mechanical tolerances of the complete product.
  • Whether startup, motor/fan vibration, movement or collision may cause temporary triggering.
  • Whether the unit should shut down immediately after tipping over, and whether automatic restart is allowed after the appliance is returned upright.
  • If precise angle values or direction information are required, a continuous-angle sensing solution should be used instead.
