Tamper Detection Should Identify “Abnormal Behavior”

After installation, smart door locks, IoT controllers, smart meters, and outdoor electronic devices generally remain in a fixed orientation.

Impact, prying, removal, overturning, or continuous vibration can serve as physical indicators for tamper detection.

Detection Logic:Tamper detection should not rely on a single instant. Instead, compare against the device’s normal fixed state to identify abnormal vibration, displacement, or orientation changes.

Orientation and Vibration Signals Work Together

Orientation signals indicate whether the device has moved away from its normal installation direction, while vibration signals capture impacts and prying. Combining both helps reduce false alarms compared with a single instantaneous trigger.

Orientation Signal

Detects whether the device has deviated from its original installation direction, making it suitable for identifying angle changes caused by removal, overturning, or significant displacement.

Vibration Signal

Captures impacts, prying, and continuous vibration and can be used as an early trigger condition for abnormal behavior.

Recommended Sensing Approach

If the device has a fixed installation orientation and removal causes a clear angle change, a fixed-angle tilt switch can be used as a tamper condition. A vibration sensor can also be added to create a multi-condition detection scheme.

Recommended Approach:Use orientation change to confirm whether the device has left its normal installation state, then use vibration as an additional condition for detecting impact, prying, or removal.

Design Considerations

  • Differentiate brief accidental impacts from persistent abnormal events.
  • Add time windows, consecutive trigger counts, and orientation cross-checking.
  • Place the sensor so normal door opening and closing will not cause false detection.
  • For wireless devices, evaluate low-power operation and standby current.
